A task is the work done to meet a deadline.
The task module ties the firm’s daily work to people: it opens with a due date, goes to a colleague and is followed from open to completed.

A legal deadline belongs to the file, a task to a person.
The two complete each other: the deadline is the legal due date of the case, the task is the work the team does to meet it. Deadlines are kept by a separate module, legal deadline tracking.
Legal deadline
- What
- A legal due date tied to a file
- Tied to
- The case file
- Where it shows
- In the agenda and the case detail
- When it ends
- Calculated skipping weekends and public holidays
Task
- What
- Work given to a person
- Tied to
- The responsible team member, and optionally a case or client
- Where it shows
- In the person’s lane and the task list
- When it ends
- On the due date; it closes when the status becomes “completed”
Tasks, kanban and the agenda answer different questions.
Assignment makes the owner of the work clear.
The thing that gets lost most often in a firm is the answer to “who is doing this?”. Every job has one owner and the task shows in that person’s lane. A lawyer hands work to an assistant or an intern; when the work changes hands, assigning the task to someone else is enough, and nobody has to explain the file again.

The log of one task
- 01/0609:05
You create the task with a title, a description and a due date, and link it to a case if you wish.
- 02/0609:06
You assign the task to a colleague; it takes its place in that person’s lane.
- 03/0609:06
The assignee is informed through the notification channels.
- 04/0609:40
The owner sets the task to “in progress” and carries out the work.
- 05/0614:00
A manager filters tasks by person and status and sees the team’s load.
- 06/0616:30
When the work is done the task becomes “completed” and stays visible as past work.

What a task carries
A task is a small piece of work with a clear owner: preparing the evidence list, attaching service papers to the file, getting back to a client. When a task is linked to a case file or a client record, it stays clear which file the work is for.
- Title
- What is to be done.
- Description
- Optional detail.
- Responsible person
- The team member who carries it out.
- Due date
- The day the task has to be met.
- Status
- Open, in progress or completed.
- Linked record
- Optionally a case file or a client.
- 02/04
Follow-up: status and due date
Tasks move through open, in progress and completed. The list filters by person and status and reads by due date; at the start of the week a manager sees who carries how much work.

Who sees and assigns tasks?
Permissions to see, create and assign tasks are role based. In a firm, a manager can be given the tasks of the whole team while an assistant sees only their own work. How permissions are set up per role is explained on roles and permissions, so the task surface follows the same authorisation logic as every other module.
- 04/04
The assignee is informed
Assignment is not silent: when a task is given to someone, that person is informed through the notification channels. How in-app, email, SMS, WhatsApp and push work is described on the notifications page. For the place of tasks in daily planning next to hearings and legal deadlines, see calendar and agenda.

What do lawyers ask about tasks?
How is a task different from a hearing or a legal deadline?
Hearings and legal deadlines are dated records tied to a case and shown in the agenda. A task is work given to a person inside the team, with an owner, a due date and a status. The jobs needed to prepare for a hearing are assigned as tasks, while the hearing itself stays in the agenda.
Can I reassign a task to someone else?
Yes. Changing the responsible person is enough: the task moves to the new person’s lane and the rest of the job, the description, due date and linked case, stays as it was.
Can a task be linked to a case or a client?
Yes. You can link a task to a case file or a client record. The link is optional; general firm jobs can be opened without attaching them to a file.
Who can see tasks?
Visibility depends on your role’s permissions. A manager can be shown the whole team’s tasks and an assistant only their own. The permission model is explained on roles and permissions.
What happens when a task is completed?
The task moves to completed and stays in the list as past work. Who completed what can be read afterwards, while open jobs remain visible separately.
- Calendar and agenda · hearings, deadlines and appointments carry time-bound work, tasks carry person-bound work.
- Case management · link the task to the file so it stays clear which case the work is for.
- Notifications · the assignee is informed in the app, by email, SMS, WhatsApp and push.
If several people run your firm, the law firm solution shows how the modules work together.
