How the period is calculated
For legal periods the tool applies the common rules of Turkish procedural law in order: first the raw end, then the holiday rollover, and last the judicial recess extension. The steps are listed in the result card, and the same steps play out day by day on the calendar.
Rules applied
1/5
Days, weeks, months and years (HMK art. 92)
In a period set in days the start day is not counted, and the period ends at the end of the last day. A period set in weeks, months or years ends on the day of the last week, month or year that corresponds to the start day. When the ending month has no corresponding day, the period ends on the last day of that month: a one-month period starting on 31 January ends on the last day of February. The Enforcement and Bankruptcy Code art. 19 and CMK art. 39 follow the same method.
2/5
A last day on a holiday (HMK art. 93)
Public holidays are part of the period and are not skipped when counting. If the last day falls on a public holiday, the period ends at the end of working hours on the first working day after the holiday. Weekends are treated like holidays; when a religious holiday and a weekend run together, the period rolls over to the first working day. The holiday table, including the 2024–2030 religious holidays, is below.
3/5
Judicial recess (HMK art. 102–104)
The judicial recess starts on 20 July and ends on 31 August. In matters subject to it, a period that ends during the recess is deemed extended by one week from the day the recess ends, which means 7 September. If 7 September is a weekend or a holiday, the period rolls over to the first working day. The “This matter is subject to the judicial recess” option switches this on and off. The period does not extend in the urgent matters listed in HMK art. 103 (such as interim injunctions and attachments, maintenance, employee claims, bankruptcy and concordat).
4/5
Holiday eves (arife)
The eves of Ramazan Bayrami and Kurban Bayrami and 28 October are half-day holidays (Law no. 2429). Whether a last day falling on an eve extends the period is disputed in practice. The tool does not roll the date over; it shows a warning with the result and suggests filing before noon on the eve as a precaution.
5/5
Business-day mode
Some administrative and contractual periods are counted in business days. In this mode counting starts on the day after the start date and Saturdays and Sundays are always skipped; with the option on, the fixed public holidays, the 3 days of Ramazan Bayrami and the 4 days of Kurban Bayrami are skipped too. This is the same business-day count as in HukukBis case management software. The judicial recess is not applied in this mode.
The holiday calendar covers 2024–2030. If the end or a rollover day falls outside that range, the tool does not guess; it returns an error message.
Examples: appeal period and judicial recess
The four examples were calculated with the same engine as the tool; try your own dates in the form above.
A two-week appeal that meets a religious holiday
For a decision served on Friday, May 15, 2026, the two-week appeal period runs out on Friday, May 29, 2026, which falls in Kurban Bayrami. A weekend follows the holiday, so the period ends at the end of working hours on Monday, June 1, 2026, the first working day.
A period that meets the judicial recess
In a matter subject to the judicial recess, a decision served on Friday, July 10, 2026 has a two-week period that runs out on Friday, July 24, 2026, inside the recess. Under HMK art. 104 the period is extended by one week from 31 August, when the recess ends, so the due date is Monday, September 7, 2026.
End of the month
For a one-month period starting on Saturday, January 31, 2026, February has no matching day, so the period runs out on the last day of February, Saturday, February 28, 2026. That day is a weekend, so the due date is Monday, March 2, 2026.
Business-day mode
A 1 business day period starting on Thursday, March 19, 2026: the next day is the first day of Ramazan Bayrami and the weekend that follows is skipped too, so the due date is Monday, March 23, 2026. Had the holiday not been skipped, the result would be Friday, March 20, 2026.
What is out of scope
- Service rules and how the service date is determined; the calculation takes the start date as entered.
- Periods set by a judge and statutory extensions such as the extra time for a statement of defence.
- Special-law provisions that change when a period starts or how long it is; confirm the ready-made periods against the statute.
- A firm rollover for holiday eves; only a warning is shown.
This tool is a calculation aid for information only; it is not legal advice and its result must not be used as a binding determination of a deadline. The final decision is the lawyer’s. Service rules, how the service date is determined, the effect of holiday eves, statutory extensions and file-specific conditions are out of scope. Checking the type of period, the start date and the accuracy of the result against the legislation is the user’s responsibility. Always verify the period separately before acting on a calculated date.

Deadline tracking in the product
This tool makes one calculation. Inside HukukBis every deadline is attached to a case, shows with a countdown in the agenda and on the dashboard, and is reminded to the team. See legal deadline tracking for the deadline types, record fields and the link to the agenda, and case management software for the whole file. For the legal framework of appeal and cassation periods, read the guide to appeal and cassation deadlines in Turkey.
